Facts about Haryana

Haryana State is one of the few states in India which have witnessed the full success of the green revolution.  Soon after the inception of Haryana State in 1966, the Government gave the highest priority to improving agricultural production in the rural area.  Measures included expanding and modernizing the irrigation system in the shortest possible time.  The State has an unhappy location and consequently suffers from acute shortage of water to meet the expanding irrigation requirements.  The state is underlain by Saline Ground Water specially in deep zones in about 65 per cent of the area.  The rise of saline water table is phenomenal and varies from 0.3 to 1 m per year.  Out of the total 44212 sq. km. area of the state, an area of 4000 sq. km has entered into danger zone with depth of groundwater table within 0 to 3 metres. Alarmingly, an area of 400 sq. km. Is engulfed in the groundwater table depth of 1 metre thus entrapped by the waterlogging conditions alongwith intense secondary salinisation.
